Dr. Rosenthal was Inaugural Director of Addiction Psychiatry at Stony Brook Medicine 2017-2021. From 2001-2014, Dr. Rosenthal was Chairman, Department of Psychiatry at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, NY. Prior to becoming Mount Sinai faculty, he was Arthur J. Antenucci Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and was Senior Associate Dean for the St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Affiliation with Columbia University. He is also Past President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (aaap.org), and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. 

Dr. Rosenthal is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry, with subspecialty certification in addiction psychiatry. Prior to coming to St. Luke's-Roosevelt, he was associate chairman for psychiatric clinical services of Beth Israel Medical Center, NY (BIMC) and directed the division on substance abuse at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Rosenthal's main research focus has been on the evaluation and treatment of the severely mentally ill with co-occurring addictive disorders, and development of new medications for substance use disorders. He has been a clinical, research, and program development consultant to hospitals, state and federal agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Following residency training, he served as Division Chief of the Substance Abuse Service (Psychiatry) at BIMC. During this time, he created the Combined Psychiatric and Addictive Disorders treatment research program, and co-developed and manualized Brief Supportive Psychotherapy for the Brief Psychotherapy Research Program.

Dr. Rosenthal also has a long-term interest in medical informatics and is past president of the American Association for Technology in Psychiatry (techpsych.org), as well as past Chair of the Information Systems Review Committee of the New York State Hospital Planning and Review Council. He has developed automated systems to screen behavioral health patients and track treatment response, and has current a research focus using big data approaches to understanding vulnerability to substance use disorders, including the opioid epidemic.

In 2004, Governor Pataki appointed Dr. Rosenthal to the NY State Mental Health Services Council. He was also appointed in 2004 as Senior Fellow, SAMHSA Co-Occurring Disorders Center for Excellence and Co-Chairman of its National Steering Council (coce.samhsa.gov). Most recently, he has been Senior Advisor to the Center for Excellence in Integrated Care, funded by the NY State Health Foundation (http://nyshealth-ceic.org). He maintains a private practice of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology for mood and addictive disorders.
